Making Ripples

During the video call with the Little Owls, Ofurhetjuhópur were amazed to see that their artworks were exhibited on a wall of their kindergarten classroom amongst others images from Iceland. From that fact, plus all the artworks that they received themselves from Prague, we talked about how our actions have consequences, how, without knowing it sometimes, we can influence the life of others and vice versa.

Dear You inspiring stories

In this last stage of the creative process, the kids were invited to place their voices.

In the case of the 4th grade group, they have chosen to narrate about the environmentally friendly cities that they have built. An invitation to take care of our planet can be heard in 3 short videos. In the case of the 5.6.7 grade group, they have chosen to do 3 short and cute plays to share with the kids from Ukraine.

The Owls train their ears and warm up their listening skills

The Owls here in Little Mole preschool were thrilled to hear we had some messages from our Icelandic friends. They were eager to listen to all the messages but when they learned that the messages were in an unknown language we decided to train our ears and warm up our listening skills first. We opened our ears to listen and try to identify all the sounds around, we also listened to different types of music in different languages.

Who are you?

I opened the first session connecting our group with yours by comparing the name of our respective kindergartens: Sólvellir for us, which means "sun", and The Little Mole for you. I said maybe your kindergarten is called that way after the famous Czech cartoon character, and I asked them what national character or cartoon we have here in Iceland, and as expected they thought of "Tulipop".

Seeing yourself >< Бачити себе

Seeing yourself, your uniqueness, recognizing yourself, being interested in yourself and appreciating yourself are such important skills for each of us.
Бачити себе, свою унікальність, усвідомлювати себе, цікавитись собою і цінувати себе - такі важливі навички для кожного з нас.

Inviting curiosity

Both groups are very curious and accept the invitations with curiosity to see what the others are doing, in the case of the self-portrait, the 4th grade group chose to take a photo and transfer to paper, the older group chose to do it freely. Within the self-portrait process we have gone out to look in nature for elements in which we feel represented.

The Universe and beyond!

Dear Art Friends,

We at Oakdale Montessori really enjoyed this project as it touched on a part of our curriculum. With our theme being the Universe. We’ve been learning about all the planets and we were able to zoom in to show the children that there is more than just one continent that they live on, on the planet earth.

We showed them that the earth is round with our Continent Globe and showed them how to read it as a map on a 2D surface.

With this we showed the children that the only way to get to our “Dear Art” friends is by an airplane or by ship and that is how we will be sending our art.

The children pointed out where we lived and then where their friends are.

Hope you enjoy our art as much as we enjoyed making it.

With love from
Oakdale Montessori

Listening to who is there

We introduced this theme in a very special way. The class sat in a big circle and closed their eyes. The played the Montessori “Silence Game” which is a calming, meditation like game which allows the child to use their senses like hearing. Once they closed their eyes, I asked them to tell me what they can hear.

- The trees in the wind
- The birds chirping
- The doorbell ringing

We got the children to paint, colour in and stick paper to make 3 sounds that they heard.

Enjoy our art project!

Love,

Saying so much through art works!

We received the package from South Africa today – and the kids were so relieved, they have been waiting for so long, they said.

It also took more time than we thought to finish the home´s project.  But the kids loved it so much, some of them put more than their family members on the picture like some zombies (might be an influence from computer games). On most of them you can see that the children are thinking about summer, even cherry-trees (which don´t grow here) are in one garden.

All the best,
Halla and Guðný

Hearing sounds like walking in the snow

They closed their eyes and to make sure no one was using their eyes, they put their hats over their eyes as you can see on the pictures attached.

Some of them were „hearing“ sound of nature, like wind and walking in the snow, but most of them thought of sounds of machines, washing machine, cars, hammer and also f. ex shouting of their sisters and brothers at home.

They were trying their best – and they could stay quiet while they listened.
