OUR LOVELY LAND

This has been by far the most exciting art project we had in a long time. The Owls really enjoyed using their surroundings to express their ideas. We started this project during our breakfast time talking about flat and solid shapes. I showed them a metallic cookie jar. First, by looking at it they guessed that it contained cookies of course. It was full of dice so when we heard the sound it makes after shaking it they all changed their mind. Sometimes you can see things you cannot hear; and hear things you cannot see. This was a way to warm up for our workshop, we will use our senses to create art pieces.

Children then looked at the dice in the jar and we talked about human made shapes, is it possible to see these shapes in nature? The tetrahedron resembles a mountain.  A basket full of sticks, bark, chestnuts, walnuts, was then shown to the kids…these are nature’s shapes, they are different in every place. For instance, in the beach most of them will look different, seashells, coconuts, etc.

We then went outside  to get started  with our project, Little mole is  surrounded by nature, a huge park full  of bushes, flowers and several different trees, the area was full of resources and  children first listen to their surroundings to get inspired and then tried to use everything around them to “paint a picture” of  our land. We took pictures after 30 minutes but many of them wanted to continue working on it and changing parts of their art piece. Art is a process and sometimes it is never ending.

We came inside later and watched a video where the children where all working on their artwork and discussed how it felt and what did they attempt to express.

- It felt “natury” and fun, brilliant. We liked using our hands but not getting dirty, everything was wet from the rain. It felt different because we didn’t use paper, glue or markers.

- We made our school and garden, a summer house, the TV tower, a flower, a rock tornado, a tree, a heart and a hut. Look at the pictures and try  to guess.

Kindly,
The Owls from Little  Mole
