Land Art has proven to be a wonderful opportunity for energetic children to explore and observe the outdoors firsthand. The children began to approach and discover common natural materials around us, which they had previously overlooked, as necessary components for creating their artwork. Using the geographical features of Jeju Island, lessons held on the beach allowed children to gather pebbles, sand, washed-up seaweed, seawater, and even small discarded glass fragments from the sea. They built, adhered, and connected these materials to create their art pieces.
Moreover, the beautifully shaped stones and linear patterns on leaves, both natural masterpieces, seem to have offered inspiration to the children about spatial and linear symmetry. Truly, the land art activities were an enriching way for our kids to interact with the natural world. I believe that it also provided a hands-on learning experience that not only stimulates creativity but also introduces children to environmental awareness. As they gather materials for their artworks, they learn to value the resources the natural world offers and understand the need to preserve them. Moreover, through the experience, our class could learn to see beauty and potential in everyday elements of nature that often go unnoticed. It helped our kids foster their observational skills, enhancing their ability to pay attention to detail.
